Bio
Anna Neumann (b. 1999, Phoenix, AZ) left the 115 degree southwest desert for the cool Pacific Northwest to Seattle, Washington. In Seattle Anna sought out a Bachelor in Fine Arts degree from Cornish College for the Arts. With her time at Cornish Anna developed an interest in sculpture and video projection work. Giving time for her to refine her skills in Adobe After Effects and Premier. Starting an interest into the 3D space with sculpture and projections. Leading to the sculptures as vessels for the projections to live. The Sculptures and projections took shape around the interest of space and the fragility of life.
Artist Statement
I explore the relationship of the universe to us here on earth. Within this large and overwhelming topic, I look at how the forms and materials of space are all around us, making us who we are. Iexplore the relationships between the macro and micro, from space in the night sky to the cells that make up our bodies using sculpture and projections.
The projections give that larger than life feeling, like the universe When I use light to project into three-dimensional space, to evoke a sense of vastness and permeability. Sculpture helps me create forms that have similar shapes, such as how a supernova can look similar to a cell. This makes the massive feel comforting, bringing about a sense of oneness. I bring the two together to collapse boundaries between object and space. This combination of sculpture and technology suggests harmony and an interplay of scale. This deep dive into the forms around us is reflected in the structures that I use in my work: my sculptures appear organically geometric, scientific and natural. The projections, using light and sometimes mirrors, extend and repeat these shapes across and beyond the sculpture and across and beyond the viewer. The use of mirrors and scale make the viewer self-reflective, as they can see themselves in the forms. Creating this oneness with the forms around us helps to create that oneness. These forms make themselves present in my video work, another exploration of the possibilities of technology, movement, and reality, transforming sculptures into experiences
We can be awed by see pictures of nebulae then look at pictures of cells or microorganisms and experience the same sense of awe. My work is like a deep dive into space, in multiple senses space around us and space within us. I want to explore this oneness in the universe:. The idea that we are all made up of the same basic compounds
